Recovery coaching is a
holistic, strength-based model of addiction recovery support, where the focus
is on what someone CAN do, as opposed to what they cannot.
Statistics demonstrate that recovery
coaching lowers the cost of health care and is an up and coming trend in health care, especially substance abuse. Peer support specialists are highly sought after as
traditional treatment programs are quite costly and do not offer the personal mentoring that sustains recovery and/or assists consumers recognize their need for recovery. Coaches use their life experience and success in
conjunction with their professional training and are valuable as a resource to other health care providers, families and the consumer.
Peer specialists improve self esteem, life skills and social interaction, and act as a bridge between different providers in the continuum of care
in the journey of recovery. While traditional treatment focuses on the
problem, coaching focuses on the solution. A coach focuses on removing barriers that prevent a client from
achieving their own goals, coaches are trained to capitalize on the best in their
clients, giving them hope and encouragement and the recognition that they are more than their disease. This is proven to lead to a higher success rate and less chance of a relapse.
As the field of health care and substance
abuse changes, so do the roles needed to support it. It is a proven fact that
the use of coaches drastically reduce hospital visits and
empower clients to be able to live independently.
